A message from TSD Governing Board President: The Honorable Eric Hogue, Mayor of Wylie, Texas
On behalf of the TSD Governing Board, welcome to the Texas School for the Deaf website. I am honored to serve as the Board President of this historic and award-winning school.
To tell you a little about the TSD School Board, we are a nine-member board appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate. While each of us come from across the state of Texas with different backgrounds and experiences, we all have a passion and love for TSD as a school district and as a state agency. We are unique in that we must serve in a dual capacity role in order to ensure success for our students and our state government. The board is directed to organize and conduct itself like the board of a local school district, while at the same time, oversee and lead TSD services as a state agency. We have specific responsibilities related to budget preparation, policy adoption and appointment of TSD’s Superintendent.
It’s hard to believe that this year marks our school’s 160th birthday! We are one of the top schools for the deaf in the United States, due to our outstanding administrators and teachers, our great students and supportive parents. We currently have a student population of nearly 600 students on our historic Austin, Texas campus.
Of course, we can’t forget our community members such as the Texas Association for the Deaf, the TSD Foundation, our state elected officials and the many volunteers who support us as we continue to grow forward into the next 160 years. Thanks to all of you for the work you do to make TSD such a success at the local, state and national level. Please know that your efforts do not go unnoticed by the Board.
Our school’s mission is to continually ensure students excel in an environment where they can learn, grow, and belong. Our goal is to be an innovative leader by providing a strong education to our students and empower them to be successful in whatever they choose to do with their lives. We want them to become life-long learners and productive citizens in our community, who will continue to grow long after they graduate from TSD. We also strive to reach beyond our school buildings in Austin to support all deaf students and their families across the state of Texas by providing resources through our outreach programs and services.
I believe some exciting things are on the horizon for TSD.
Thanks again for your support of our school!
