Israel-Palestine Conflict: A Letter from High School Principal and Career and Technical Education Supervisor

Dear Parents, Students, and Staff Members of TSD High School,

I hope this email finds you in good health, despite the challenging circumstances our community currently faces. The Israel-Palestine conflict has become a significant global topic of discussion, prompting our high school to reflect on these events and their impact on our students' education and well-being.

As we navigate the complexities of the world, it is crucial to promote understanding, empathy, and respect among our students, staff, and families. I want to assure you that our high school remains dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued. In these trying times, it is essential for our community to come together and support one another.

We recognize that students may find it challenging to process these events both inside and outside the classroom. I encourage parents and guardians to support these conversations at home. When discussing these topics with children or teens, please ensure you are prepared to address the incident and use simple language that they can understand.

It is through these discussions that our students can develop the skills necessary to navigate complex issues and contribute positively to society. Here are some tips for parents/caregivers to consider:

- Approach all queries from young people with respect and sincerity.
- Provide clear and honest responses, using language tailored to their understanding.
- Be attentive to signs of distress among children.
- Ask young people what they are learning from their friends, peers, and social media.
- Highlight the importance of individuals who assisted the victims and their families during and after such incidents; this can be enlightening and reassuring for children.

In the upcoming weeks, we will be organizing opportunities for our students to hold the space in thoughtful discussions about global conflicts, including the Israel-Palestine situation. Our social studies teachers will facilitate age-appropriate conversations, emphasizing mutual respect, empathy, and peaceful resolution.

Additionally, our school counselors and support staff are available to assist any students who may need additional emotional support. For community resources, including grief services, you can contact our Parent Liaison, Ms. Ann Meredith ([email protected] V: 512-800-0923 VP: 737-301-916), and School-Based Mental Health and Wellness Coordinator, Ms. Ashley O'Neill ([email protected] V: 512-462-5601 VP: 512-298-4866)

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and support as we navigate these challenging times together. Your partnership is invaluable.

Warm regards,

Karl Hummel
