Succeeding Claire Bugen’s 48+ Year Tenure,

Peter L. Bailey Assumes Role as Superintendent of Texas School for the Deaf

 

Austin, Texas September 1, 2023 – The Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) is thrilled to announce that Peter L. Bailey officially commences his tenure as the school’s new superintendent today.

 

Following an exhaustive search involving extensive input from various stakeholders, TSD’s Governing Board unanimously determined Bailey possesses the expertise and vision necessary to continue to move the school forward while remaining true to its mission.

 

With over 30 years of distinguished leadership experience in the field of Deaf Education, Bailey brings a wealth of knowledge to his role as superintendent. Throughout his career, he’s held influential positions at a number of esteemed institutions, including The Learning Center for the Deaf in Massachusetts, Maryland School for the Deaf, Delaware School for the Deaf, Texas School for the Deaf, and Connecticut’s American School for the Deaf. Most recently, he was superintendent at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Philadelphia.

 

Since July 3rd, Bailey has been actively engaged in transition activities related to assuming his role as Superintendent of TSD. With a bachelor’s degree in Human Services and a master’s in Organizational Management and Leadership from Massachusetts’ Springfield College, Bailey’s educational achievements coupled with his professional experience, readies him to lead TSD with excellence.

 

Bailey succeeds Claire Bugen, who was TSD’s superintendent for over 25 years. Under Bugen’s leadership, the school experienced remarkable growth and achieved significant milestones. Both the TSD and Deaf communities express their deep gratitude to Bugen for her indelible dedication and commitment to the success of students as well as school staff.
