Texas School for the Deaf 2023-2024
TSD School-Wide Theme:
Rise with Ranger Pride

Hello! I  was named after the Ursa Major/Ursa Minor star.  The name meaning of Ursa is a little female bear. I am a proud “Texaylander,” born a Marylander, and raised a Texan although she graduated from Maryland School for the Deaf. I am currently living in Austin, Texas with Maryland roots.  I have a Bachelor Degree in Communication Studies and a Master’s degree in Sign Language Teaching/Education from Gallaudet University. I worked at Maryland School for the Deaf, as an ASL teacher for several departments (Family Education & Early Childhood, Elementary, and Middle School). I also teach American Sign Language at community college and Gallaudet University. I am a team member of the American Sign Language CIA (curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

My Educational Philosophy
I believe that students are a gift and possess diverse talents and capabilities. I consider it a privilege to help facilitate their learning and academic growth. I believe each student learns in their own way and style. I strive to provide a brave/safe and nurturing environment where each student can have the opportunity to experience success and progress. It is my goal to help encourage my students to look beyond the four walls of our classroom and the many screens of Zoom meetings and view the world around them as a place of learning and discovery. By doing this, I hope to instill in them a desire to become lifelong learners.
