Student groupings will be consistent and not change throughout the day. Each group of students will include a variety of learners. Teachers will adapt instruction to meet individual needs and use a bilingual approach to learning. We will incorporate multicultural perspectives, empathy for others, and an understanding of the diverse backgrounds that our students come from.
Our program uses the Texas Resource System (TRS) curriculum for our K-5th-grade language arts, social studies and science classes. The TRS is widely used in the state of Texas. The curriculum incorporates technology, aligns with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS, the state standards), and provides rigor and relevance as well as a vertical alignment throughout the grades. For math, we use the Origo Stepping Stones curriculum. The focus is on developing the students’ mathematical skills along with their thinking and reasoning abilities. The curriculum is aligned with the TEKS.
Ms. Amanda Kolb:
I am so excited to embark on my third year of teaching, and I have been fortunate to teach many of these students the entire time. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Gallaudet University and my teaching certification via iTeach online courses. Beside teaching, I love to spend time with family/friends and pets. Also I enjoy spending my free time volunteering at the animal shelter and fostering dogs. I have fostered more than 10 dogs, 4 of them just this past summer.
Ms. Jessica VonGarrel:
This is my ninth year in the TSD Elementary Department, and I am excited to work with you and your children in fifth grade. I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to Austin, Texas to work at TSD. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Masters in Teaching (MAT: focus on ASL/English Bilingual Education) from Gallaudet University in 2007 and 2010, respectively. During my free time, I enjoy cups of coffee, a good book on my patio, and fiddling with a variety of technology equipment.
Ms. Kimberly Rogers:
I am thrilled to have the second opportunity to teach your children this year! It’s my eleventh year of teaching, but my second year at TSD. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Masters in Teaching (MAT: focus on ASL/English Bilingual Education) from Gallaudet University in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my children and family. I love road trips, coffee, and tacos.
Mrs. Brittany Kollmer:
This year is my fourth year teaching at TSD, and my second with these children. I am thrilled to be working and growing with these students again. I received my Master’s degree from Gallaudet University in Elementary and Deaf Education, and my Bachelor’s degree from The College at Brockport in Health and Earth Science. When I am not teaching, I like to spend my time reading, swimming laps, and eating!
