Austin, Texas – February 17, 2023 – Today kicks off the Academic Bowl Central Regional competition for high school students who are deaf and hard of hearing, hosted by Gallaudet University (GU) at Texas School for the Deaf (TSD), in Austin.
Twenty teams, from 14 states, compete over two days, aiming to qualify for the upcoming National Academic Bowl finals.
The competition involves quick recall by teams of four players, to answer general knowledge questions in the categories of: arts and entertainment, language and literature, mathematics, popular culture, science and technology, sports and leisure, current events, and potpourri.
Excited to host the upcoming competition at TSD, Superintendent, Claire Bugen, says, “the Academic Bowl brings together the brightest students from deaf schools and programs across the nation, and we eagerly welcome all the teams competing this weekend.
“While I will be cheering for TSD, I am very proud of all the students in the region selected to compete, and wish all the teams the best of luck!”
GU started the Academic Bowl in 1997 for students across the nation who are deaf or hard of hearing, to foster academic excellence, healthy competition, and sportsmanship among peers – all while making lifelong friends.
