Interpreters Rock & Chop

For the last 13 years, TSD interpreters have been working alongside our culinary arts students in the Hilton kitchen as they prepare for the TSDF Diamond Gala. Understanding culinary terms and techniques in a busy kitchen can get hectic. In November, the interpreters participated in a hands-on workshop with Jackie Johnstone, where they learned knife skills, preparation techniques, and terminology. Thanks to Jackie for the fabulous (and delicious) workshop, and Claire Champagne for the awesome idea!

Residential Families

Residential Families Belong Here Too! Families of TSD students who live in San Antonio were met Sunday at their bus stop and taken to eat at a nearby restaurant. This was a wonderful opportunity for families to socialize and network with each other, share contact information, ask questions and share with TSD staff. In addition to a free meal, families were given their own version of "You Belong Here" T-shirts and updates about the school. Parents who could not attend the dinner expressed their appreciation of all the amazing Ranger staff and hard work that is done to help their child feel that they belong. See the attached flyer for all 6 residential bus meeting dates. For questions, contact: Parent Liaison Ann Meredith

Welding Students Make TSD History

Welding Students
Zachary H., Mark H., Marion W., Dillon H., Robert S., Gerry R., Israel M., Adiel R., Eric N., and Corbin B. have made TSD history!  These students taking Richard Layton’s Welding Technology class earned their federal OSHA-10 Construction and Health Certificates.  This is the first group of Rangers to take and pass the rigorous safety course and exam, which is now a requirement of students participating in the dual-credit course offered in partnership with TSD and Austin Community College.  It will be a huge asset to the students in terms of enhancing their employability skills, as they now have a head start on meeting national safety standards in the welding industry.  This is no small feat, as it took an average of 18+ hours for each student to complete the certification requirements.  Be sure to congratulate them for their efforts!

ECE Family Storytelling Series

We currently have 10 teachers and 18 families learning sign language online and the program is growing! Families are excited to be learning specific ASL vocabulary and phrases to better communicate with their children and become more involved in their lives. One teacher remarked: "I wanted to tell you how happy parents are. I know who their children are as I have been working with the kids after school program. The kids came to me and say their mother is happy to have an opportunity to learn ASL online. This inspired me!"
