Celebrate Deaf Awareness Week with Texas School for the Deaf

CELEBRATE DEAF AWARENESS WEEK WITH

TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF

 

Deaf Awareness Week is celebrated annually during the last full week of September to increase public awareness about deaf issues, people and culture.

Today (September 20th) is the Texas School for the Deaf’s (TSD) first football game of the season on home turf and the school kicks off its’ Deaf Awareness Week celebration on the gridiron at 7:00 p.m. vs. the Atlas Rattlers.

  The TSD Rangers are also celebrating the team’s recent pick as one of Riddell’s Smarter Football Grants winners announced just this week by legendary NFL quarterback, Peyton Manning.

        Monday morning at 8:45 a.m., TSD will hold an inaugural flag ceremony on the TSD field, and raise the Deaf Union Sign flag.

  Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., TSD teams with Austin’s Central Library, featuring a very special line-up of ASL Expressions. Live streamed and free to the public, storytellers, poets, and performers will take over the new downtown library’s event space, showcasing the beauty of American Sign Language (ASL). ASL interpreted library tours will start at 4:00 p.m.

  Wednesday, some students will tune in while others will experience Deaf Pioneers at TSD from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. With presentations and activity kits sent to all remote attendees ahead of time, students will meet and work hands-on with professionals who are deaf and hard of hearing role models currently working in a variety of computer technology and STEM fields.

Wednesday evening, learn all about Austin’s Congress Avenue bat colony when you hop on board with the Austin Tour Company for a special Bat Cruise at 6:30 p.m., featuring ASL interpreters. Get started with a pre-cruise happy hour at The YETI Barr, from 5:30 - 6:15 p.m. where all guests enjoy one complimentary beverage and 30% off any YETI Products.   Wrapping up Deaf Awareness Week, on Friday, TSD will host a closing ceremony for students and community members at 1:20 p.m.

  Friday evening, TSD invites everyone to St. Elmo Brewing Company to take part in a community showcase, featuring live ASL performances, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
