A Greek Odyssey

Thursday, March 20, 2008

In keeping with TSD’s ’07-‘08 theme, “Odyssey”, and correlating with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum, Elementary students culminated a week full of learning and activities focused on Greece and Greek culture with "Greek Festival 2008". The entire week prior, students studied Greek history, science, literature, performances, mathematics and government and got to apply their knowledge by performing and making crafts at the Greek festival.

Parents and volunteers from the University of Texas helped with the day’s activities, including Olympic-style sports competitions, Greek crafts, a mini petting zoo and everyone enjoyed delicious Greek delicacies. Students participated in two performances, at 9:00 AM and 11:30 AM, featuring Greek Aesop fables and Greek tragedies/comedies. Student art completed during their Greek study was also on display.

A special thanks to the following sponsors for their help to bring this event to TSD: Sprint Relay Services, Austin’s Greek Orthodox Church, a Houston Bakery and Brett Covington from the Farm Zoo.
