Message from the Superintendent: Addendum to Summer Programs Letter

Addendum to Summer Programs Letter

TSD will not be offering summer programs this year for early childhood, elementary, middle school, high school, special needs, or transitional students.  This includes Drivers Education.
We will be offering Extended Year Services and Accelerated Instruction Services for students who meet the criteria and are referred by their respective ARD committees.

Again, we apologize for this inconvenience and we are optimistic that this suspension of summer programs is for one year only.

Dear Parents, School Districts, State Agencies and Community Members,

With regret, we must inform you that Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) has made a decision to temporarily suspend our state funded summer school programs for the summer of 2017. This includes Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle School, High School, and Drivers Education programs. This was a very difficult decision that was based on financial constraints that the school is experiencing as we approach the end of this two-year biennial budget cycle. We simply do not have sufficient funds to offer summer programs.

Before cancelling summer school we looked at many alternatives, however, the only significant expense other than salaries that the school has between now and August 31, 2017 is summer school. No one is more saddened by this decision than we are. We take great pride in offering both TSD families and our statewide families summer enrichment programs that are a blend of summer camp experiences, academic enrichment and project-based learning in a setting that is rich with deaf role models and age appropriate peers.

We regret this inconvenience and lost opportunity for your students. We are hopeful that our funding appropriation for this next biennium will restore our financial integrity. It is our full intention to reactivate the summer programs for next year.

This announcement does not include Extended School Year services that are part of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), or Accelerated Instruction and STAAR retesting, as these services are recommended for individual TSD students in the ARD/IEP meetings. We will communicate with the individual families of students recommended for these programs regarding the dates and schedule for these services.

TSD will continue to host our Family Weekend Retreat and our Communication Skills Workshops since these are funded with federal dollars.
