Who can attend Texas
School for the Deaf (TSD)?
In order to be eligible to attend TSD, a student must have a documented
hearing loss, be between the ages of 0 to 21 years, and live in Texas.
Students are not considered for residential placement until they are
5 years of age and in kindergarten.
What is involved in the
admission process ?
The parent or guardian of a student must complete an application
packet which includes the following: student/family information, a copy
of the student's social security card and birth certificate, health
history, immunization records, and a TB test and physical examination
within the past year. The parent must also provide school records or
sign a release so that TSD can obtain these records.
What happens after the
application is complete?
Once all of the information is received in the Admission Office,
the file is reviewed by TSD staff. Then an appointment at TSD is scheduled
for the student. The student is assessed, a social history is conducted
by a school counselor with the parents, and a health history is obtained
by one of the school nurses. Following this, an ARD meeting is held
to discuss placement at TSD. The student's local school district is
invited and encouraged to participate in this meeting.
How long does this process
require?
After the Admission Office receives all of the information necessary
to process the application and reviews it, the applicant is scheduled
for the next available admission appointment. This usually requires
three to four weeks so please do not withdraw your child from school
where he/she is now enrolled.
